History
The Evangelical Presbyterian Church in England and Wales (EPCEW) is a young
denomination with roots that go back hundreds of years. It was formed in two
stages.
- In 1986 the London Presbyterian Conference drew together a group of
ministers and other active Christians who wanted to see a new Presbyterian
Church in England. From that conference arose the Presbyterian Association in
England (PAE).
- In 1996 five churches that had identified themselves with the PAE declared
themselves to be a Presbytery, calling themselves the Evangelical Presbyterian
Church in England and Wales.
Since that time the presbytery has grown to 9 churches and is currently
developing a new mission church in the Birmingham area.
Doctrinal Commitment
The EPCEW holds as its confession the Westminster
Confession of Faith (WCF),
which was drawn up at Westminster Abbey in London at the request of Parliament
in the 1640's. The WCF and its related Catechisms (Larger and Shorter) have
been the standard confession of faith for Presbyterians all around the world
ever since the Church of Scotland first adopted it in 1647.
